Thermal Targets for Night Hunting Practice (Hog and Coyote Drills)

Sep 10
5 min read

The best thermal targets for night hunting practice are heated steel silhouettes that radiate their own heat, because they show up in your scope the same way a hog or coyote does: a warm body against a cool background. A powered target like the DRX1 Electric Thermal Optic Target holds a steady heat signature for a full night session, so you can run spot-identify-engage drills in the dark instead of finding out on a live animal that you can't get on target fast enough.

You spent $2,000 to $4,000 on a thermal scope to kill hogs and coyotes at night. Most people then zero it once, in daylight, on cold steel, and call themselves ready. Night hunting is a different skill: find the animal by heat, confirm what it is, get steady, break the shot before it moves. Every one of those steps can be practiced on a target that actually reads like an animal in your optic.

Why cold steel fails for night hunting practice

A thermal scope doesn't see paint or paper. It sees temperature differences. A plain steel target at ambient temperature is nearly invisible through a thermal optic, and in summer it gets worse: sun-soaked ground, rocks, and berms all glow, and your target disappears into the clutter.

One shooter put it plainly: "It's difficult to zero a thermal on steel in the middle of the summer in East Texas with the sun blazing down on you." That's the exact problem. The background is hot, the steel is hot, and there's no contrast to aim at.

A heated target flips this. The DRX1 Electric Thermal Optic Target runs a controlled heater behind the steel plate, and on a July filming day the heated plate clearly overpowered the solar-heated background. Contrast is what your scope resolves, and modern imagers pick up differences under 1°C, so a target that is reliably warmer than everything around it stays crisp in the worst conditions night hunters actually face: summer heat, full darkness, fog, and overcast.

Hand warmers and DIY hacks are the usual workaround, and they mostly fail. If you want to see what works and what doesn't, read DIY thermal targets. One hunter's field solution shows how far people go: "I keep a propane torch with me and I heat up an 8" steel target thats painted. Satisfying to smack steel with thermal. Especially at night." It works for a few minutes, then the plate cools and you're torching it again. A powered target holds its signature for the whole session.

Hog and coyote drills you can run on a heated target

Coyote hunters figure this out fast. As one new night caller said: "Night calling is a whole new experience for sure. Still learning..." These drills shorten that learning curve. Run them in the dark, with the gear you actually hunt with.

  1. Zero confirmation at night. Before anything else, confirm your zero through the thermal in the conditions you hunt in. Heated steel gives you a clean aiming point that cold steel can't. Full walkthrough here: how to zero a thermal scope.

  2. Spot-identify-engage. Start with the rifle low or on the sticks pointed away. On a timer, scan, find the warm silhouette, positively identify it, mount, and fire one shot. This is the core night-hunting sequence and the one that falls apart under adrenaline.

  3. Warm-impact hit confirmation. Bullet strikes on warm steel show as distinct marks through the optic, so you can call your hits from the firing line instead of walking downrange with a flashlight. Shoot a string, read your impacts, correct, repeat.

  4. Distance changeups. Set the target at your realistic shot distances. A warm full silhouette out-glows a human at 300 m, is unmistakable at 400 m, and visible at 600 m, so you can practice ranging and holdovers well past typical coyote distances.

  5. Summer-background discipline. Run the drill at last light in July when the ground is still radiating. Learning to pick a warm body out of a hot background is a skill, and it's exactly the condition where hogs get missed.

  6. Fatigue and time pressure. Hunts happen at 2 a.m. Run your last string tired, cold, or hot. The target doesn't care; it holds temperature until you're done.

What makes a good thermal target for night hunting

Four things matter:

  • It radiates its own heat. Reflective tape and passive tricks depend on the sky and die in fog, cloud, and rain. A powered or fueled heat source works every night, all night.

  • The whole target is warm, not a dot. An animal is a body-sized signature. A hand-warmer blob teaches you to aim at a smudge. A full warm silhouette teaches real target presentation. At 100 W, the DRX1 Electric Thermal Optic Target reads like a person-sized heat signature, which is the realism standard everything else gets measured against.

  • It survives being shot. Taped-on heat sources take one hit and quit. The DRX1 Electric Thermal Optic Target puts all electronics behind the steel plate, so the plate takes the hits and the heater keeps running. Two heater elements ship in the box as spares.

  • It runs your whole session. Five hours on the big battery at 100 W covers a full night of drills without a swap.

The −10°C test matters if your coyote season runs through winter; the colder the background, the harder the contrast. More on that in thermal targets for cold weather. For summer hog work, the same logic runs in reverse: you dial the heat up so the target beats the solar background instead of blending into it.

That still is from a July filming day: the heated target glowing through an Athlon scope, next to actual people in frame. The target reads brighter than the humans. That's the contrast you want when a hog steps out of a warm treeline at midnight.

FAQ

Does it work in the dark or when it's cloudy?

Yes. The target radiates its own heat instead of reflecting the sky, so darkness, overcast, fog, and snow don't matter. That's the whole point for night hunters: it works in exactly the conditions you hunt in.

At what distance can I see it through my thermal?

A full warm silhouette out-glows a human at 300 m, is unmistakable at 400 m, and stays visible at 600 m. That covers realistic hog and coyote shot distances with room to spare, and thermal imagers resolve temperature differences under 1°C, so contrast carries the image.

How long does the battery last?

Five hours on a charge at 100 W, holding the plate at 100°C. It ships with the big battery only. Recharge from dead takes about six hours. In cold weather it draws less; the −10°C test held a clear signature at just 30 W.

Why not just tape hand warmers to my steel?

Because you get a giant bloom, then 6-inch blobs of heat, then one good hit ends it, and field reports say it "did not work @ 6 degrees and snowing." A hand warmer is a fading dot. A heated silhouette is a body-sized signature that survives hits and holds temperature all session.

What happens when I shoot the heater?

In normal use you won't. All the electronics sit behind the steel, so the plate is the armor. If a stray round does find the heater, only the element needs replacing, and two spare elements come in the box.

Won't heating the steel ruin it? AR500 softens with heat.

No. The heater is temperature-controlled and tops out around 100°C, and AR500 doesn't begin to temper until well past 200°C. Normal operation never gets the plate anywhere near the temperatures that soften steel, so it keeps its hardness for its working life.
