Thermal Targets in Canada: What You Can Actually Buy

Sep 17
5 min read

If you're shopping for a thermal target in Canada, here is the honest picture: the only products currently sold into Canada are passive reflective pads and small stick-on heater pads, all shipped up from the US. There is no heated steel thermal target made or stocked in Canada except one — the DRX1 Electric Thermal Optic Target, built in Canada, which means no cross-border shipping, no duty surprises, and no lithium battery held up at customs.

That gap is the whole story of this post. Below is what Canadians can actually order today, what crossing the border does to price and shipping, and what the made-in-Canada option looks like.

Unboxing a heated thermal target in the snow in Canada

What thermal targets are actually available to Canadians

The category splits into three types. Only one of them is made here.

  1. Passive reflective targets. Foil-faced paper or panels that reflect cold sky to create contrast. These ship fine into Canada because there's nothing in them. The catch is they depend entirely on conditions. Cloud cover, fog, and falling snow kill the contrast, and Canadian shooters have already found this out the hard way: foil tape "did not work @ 6 degrees and snowing." If you want the full breakdown of why reflective and DIY approaches fail, read DIY thermal targets and why they fall short.

  1. Stick-on heater pads from the US. A small powered pad you adhere to your own steel. You supply the plate, the battery, and the cables, and what your optic sees is a bright dot, not a silhouette. These ship from US vendors, so you're paying cross-border freight, exchange, and brokerage on a component, not a target.

  1. Heated steel thermal targets. A complete system: steel silhouette, heater, power, and control. Until now this category simply did not exist for Canadian buyers. Nobody made one here and nobody shipped one here. That is the product Dynamic Range X1 builds — the DRX1 Electric Thermal Optic Target for temperature-controlled, long-session work, and the DRX1 Solid Fuel Thermal Optic Target for a passive, no-electronics option that burns retail charcoal briquettes.

If you're new to the category and want the fundamentals first, start with what a heated thermal target is.

What ordering from the US actually costs you

Cross-border ordering on this kind of gear stacks up three ways: exchange rate, brokerage and duty exposure, and battery shipping rules. A US-made target with a lithium pack has to move under lithium battery shipping regulations, which is why batteries in this category arrive partially charged rather than full — that's the rule for lithium cells in transit, not a defect. Plan to charge before your first session.

A Canadian-made target skips the border entirely. Tyler Sangster, on camera:

"made in Canada, which means it's USMCA compliant, you'll get no tariffs as it comes across the border"

For Canadian buyers that means domestic shipping. For US buyers it means the target crosses south tariff-free under USMCA. Either way, nobody on either side of the border eats a duty bill.

The Canadian option: DRX1 Electric Thermal Optic Target

The DRX1 Electric Thermal Optic Target is a heated IPSC steel silhouette with an insulated rear-mounted heater and a sealed battery and controls box. All the electronics sit behind the steel, so the plate is the armor. You dial the temperature anywhere up to about 100°C, which means you can run it at human-body warmth for realistic detection training or hotter for maximum contrast at distance.

It was also proven in Canadian conditions, on camera. Filmed outdoors at −10°C, the silhouette held a clear signature drawing only 30 watts. Cold is where a heated target gets better, not worse, because the colder the background, the harder the contrast. The full winter story is in thermal targets in cold weather.

For long-range and night-shooting work, the Electric is the one that carries: it out-glows a human at 300 m, is unmistakable at 400 m, and visible at 600 m through a thermal optic.

Key points for Canadian buyers:

  • Made in Canada — no border, no duty, no brokerage on domestic orders

  • Ships with the battery partially charged per lithium shipping rules; top it up before first use

  • Tested on thermal video at −10°C, not just in a heated shop

  • Electronics sit behind the steel; a hit on the heater is a shooter mistake, and two spare elements are in the box

  • The DRX1 Solid Fuel Thermal Optic Target is the no-battery alternative: welded steel firebox, retail charcoal briquettes, 3+ hours per load, for short-range sport and training sessions

Why this matters for Canadian thermal owners

Canadian shooters have been improvising because there was nothing to buy. The question that keeps coming up in the forums is verbatim: "what's another way to sight in a thermal other than a hand warmer ?" Until now the honest answer in Canada was: there isn't one. Hand warmers bloom, die fast, and quit in real cold, and reflective panels quit under cloud.

The other side of it is what you paid for the optic. One hunter put it plainly: "I can't justify a $4000 optic for a few nights a year." A target you can actually train on year-round, in Canadian winter, is how that optic stops being a few-nights-a-year purchase. The DRX1 Electric Thermal Optic Target exists so the most expensive piece of glass you own gets used more than it sits.

FAQ

Is there any heated thermal target made in Canada?

Yes — one. Dynamic Range X1 builds the DRX1 Electric Thermal Optic Target and the DRX1 Solid Fuel Thermal Optic Target in Canada. Everything else in the category is a US import, and most of it is a pad or panel, not a complete heated steel target.

What's shipping like? Anything restricted?

The DRX1 Solid Fuel Thermal Optic Target has nothing restricted in it — no batteries, no flares, no HAZMAT. It ships like any steel target and you buy charcoal locally. The Electric ships with its lithium battery under standard small-parcel battery rules, the same framework as laptops and power tools, which is also why it arrives partially charged. No special permits on your end.

Does it work in the dark or when it's cloudy?

Yes. It radiates its own heat instead of reflecting the sky, so dark, overcast, fog, and snow don't matter. That's the core difference from reflective targets, which need clear cold sky to show contrast.

Tried heating targets in negative temps — everything cools too fast. Does this work in real cold?

It was tested outdoors at −10°C and the silhouette popped clearly against the cold background at only 30 watts of output. The colder the background, the stronger the contrast, so Canadian winter is where it performs best.

How long does the battery last?

Five hours on a charge — 5 hours at 100 watts holding a 66% IPSC plate at 100°C, on the big battery it ships with. Recharge from dead takes about six hours. At −10°C it held a clear signature on just 30 watts, so cold sessions draw far less than you'd expect.

At what distance can I see it?

A warm full-size IPSC silhouette out-glows a human at 300 m, is unmistakable at 400 m, and visible at 600 m. Thermal imagers resolve temperature differences under 1°C, so contrast, not raw heat, is what carries.
