What Is a Heated Thermal Target? (And Who Makes Them)

A heated thermal target is a steel shooting target with a heating element mounted on the back, so the plate radiates its own heat and shows up through a thermal scope day or night. Plain steel goes invisible in thermal once it matches air temperature; adding a controlled heat source keeps the target warmer than the background, and that contrast is what your optic actually sees.

The reason the category exists is simple. Cold steel reflects the sky instead of radiating heat, so shooters who spent thousands on a thermal optic end up aiming at nothing. How does a heated thermal target work?

Every product in the category follows the same basic recipe:

1. Start with a steel target. Usually an IPSC silhouette, because a man-shaped heat signature is what thermal shooters actually want to see.

2. Mount a heating element on the back. The steel faces the shooter and takes the hits. The element hides behind it, in the plate's shadow.

3. Power it. A battery, a power cable, or (in one competitor's case) a pyrotechnic flare supplies the heat.

4. Let contrast do the work. Thermal imagers resolve temperature differences under 1°C, so the target doesn't need to be hot, just warmer than everything behind it.

5. Shoot the front, not the back. The electronics live behind the armor, so normal hits never touch them.

One Sniper's Hide shooter who tested an electrically heated steel setup described exactly this contrast-not-heat principle: "The heating is very minimal - they aren't even warm to the touch, but it's plenty for LWIR to get a solid color that stands out from the background. Those 12v batteries kept the targets heated for at least 3 hours in 50F weather."

Who makes heated thermal targets?

Strictly defined, a heated thermal target is a system that actively heats a shootable target so it presents a thermal signature. Three companies make one:

IR.Tools. Sells a bolt-on electric heater pad as a component. You supply your own steel, battery, and cabling, glue the pad on, and wait for the adhesive to cure. It works, but what your optic sees is a bright spot, not a silhouette.

Sisu Arms. Sells a flare-heated steel system in the $2,800 to $3,000 range. A pyrotechnic flare heats the plate. No batteries, but every session burns proprietary HAZMAT-shipped flares, and each flare burns for 15 to 30 minutes.

Dynamic Range X1 (DRX1). Makes the DRX1 Electric Thermal Optic Target, a complete battery-powered system: AR500 IPSC silhouette, insulated rear-mounted heater, sealed battery and controls box, and a temperature dial. It is the only product in the category where you set the signature instead of taking whatever the heat source gives you. DRX1 also makes the DRX1 Solid Fuel Thermal Optic Target, a passive solid-fuel version that burns ordinary charcoal briquettes for shorter-range training sessions. Why not just use a hand warmer?

The most common objection to the whole category is one YouTube comment long: "Its called a hand warmer.."

Fair question, and most buyers started there. As one Sniper's Hide member put it: "I was using hot hands when I first started and thought there had to be something better."

Here is what a hand warmer can't do:

• Survive a hit. One good hit and it's done. Steel with a rear-mounted heater takes the hit and keeps glowing.

• Hold a temperature. A hand warmer decays from the moment it activates. The DRX1 Electric Thermal Optic Target holds whatever temperature you dial in for the whole session.

• Stand at 300 yards. A hand warmer is a faint blob a few inches across. A full warm IPSC silhouette out-glows a live human at 300 m, is unmistakable at 400 m, and is visible at 600 m.

• Look like anything. Hand warmers bloom into shapeless blobs. A heated silhouette reads as a man-shaped signature with a crisp edge.

How hot does a heated thermal target get?

Contrast matters more than raw temperature. Because thermal imagers resolve differences under 1°C, a target only a few degrees above background already reads clearly; DRX1 has filmed its silhouette popping against a −10°C background while drawing only 30 watts. At the top end, the DRX1 Electric Thermal Optic Target can drive the plate up to about 100°C, and the dial lets you run it anywhere below that. Set it near body temperature and the steel reads like a person through the optic: DRX1's own demo puts it as getting "the temperature of the steel target up to match what the human body is," so anything that would show up if it were a person shows up on the target.

Steel safety is built around a separate number: the system's hard ceiling stays below 200°C in every condition, because AR500 doesn't start tempering until roughly 232°C. The heat that makes the target visible never touches the hardness of the plate.

Other points worth knowing:

• All electronics sit behind the steel, so getting shot isn't a normal-use issue.

• The heating system carries no caliber rating of its own; the caliber rating belongs to the steel you hang it on.

• It radiates its own heat, so darkness, cloud cover, fog, and snow don't matter.

• Long-range and sniper training use belongs to the electric model; the DRX1 Solid Fuel Thermal Optic Target is the short-range sport and training option.

How long does the battery last?

Five hours on a charge, running 100 watts into a 66% IPSC plate. Recharging from dead takes about six hours. At −10°C the target held a clear signature on only 30 watts, so cold weather doesn't gut the runtime the way you'd expect.

At what distance can I see it?

A warm full-size IPSC silhouette out-glows a live human at 300 m, is unmistakable at 400 m, and is visible at 600 m. You're looking at a man-shaped heat signature, not a 1-inch square. Thermal imagers resolve differences under 1°C, so contrast carries the distance, not raw heat.

Does it work in the dark or when it's cloudy?

Yes. The target radiates its own heat instead of reflecting the sky, so dark, overcast, fog, and snow make no difference. It has been filmed glowing against a −10°C background through a thermal optic.

Won't heating the steel ruin it? AR500 softens with heat.

No. The system holds a hard ceiling below 200°C under any condition, including component failure, and AR500 doesn't start tempering until about 232°C. There is no setting or failure mode that lets the target exceed the ceiling.

Can I actually set the temperature?

Yes, and nobody else in the category offers that. Dial the plate anywhere up to about 100°C: run it near body temperature so it reads like a live target, or hotter for maximum contrast at distance. Flares and heat pads dump uncontrolled heat that fades from the moment they start; this holds the signature you set.
