Thermal Target for Night Courses: Where the Cheap Tricks Stop

3 min read

In daylight a plate that has soaked up sun shows in a thermal optic. By late evening everything on the range cools to the same temperature and the plate disappears. For a quick zero, a hand warmer taped to the target or a bag of ice will do. For a night course with six to twelve students, they do not: they cool, they die when hit, and someone walks downrange every relay to reset them. The heated target heats steel you already own to up to 100 C, sets up in about five minutes, and runs five hours at full power on one battery.

Watch: The Thermal Target Built for Military Courses (8:07) on YouTube. The cheap tricks tried honestly, the side by side, the 100 to 1,000 yard captures, and the questions instructors ask.

Which one is the person? Through the optic the heated plate and a body read the same.

Try the cheap tricks first

If you are new to thermal, try them. Hand warmers taped on, reflective tape, a plate preheated with a torch, a small fire near the target. For a hunter zeroing a few times a year they are enough, and the target below is overkill.

  • A bag of ice stapled to a stand works until the first hit.

  • A fire glows and cools fast, and in late July and August the fire index closes that option.

  • Flares work, and every restart is a walk downrange, and burn bans stop them too.

  • Hand warmers do not get hot enough, do not stay hot long enough, and do not take the hits a night of training puts on a target.

What the heated target is

A heating element on the back of any steel target from a 66 percent IPSC up, a control box on the post behind the plate with a knob to set the power up to 100 watts, and a battery in the box. The steel hides everything. Each kit ships with a spare element.

What it looks like from 100 to 1,000 yards

The captures in the video were taken with the cheapest thermal optic on the shelf, about $1,500, from 100 yards out to 1,000, at several power settings. The rule of thumb: if the optic can show you a person at a given distance, it will show you this target at that distance.

Weather

Snow, hail, freezing rain and dust are where every hack gives up. The target has been through all of them in testing and keeps running.

The questions instructors ask

  • What if a round hits it? The electronics sit behind the AR500. The control board and battery are on the post or stand, not on the steel, with a lead to the element.

  • Can I zero up close? As close as it is safe to shoot the steel you have hung it on.

  • How long does it run? Five hours of continuous heat at 100 watts. Turned down to 30 watts it lasts a full 18 hour block. Anywhere between, depending on the air temperature and how much contrast you want; some instructors turn it down on purpose to make the target harder to find.

  • What do I rebuy? The adhesive heating elements. Sun and rain wear them, so plan on one a year per target.

  • What is the warranty? One year. The bigger promise is the 60 day return: send it back if it is not right. Buyers on a purchase order get the system before they pay.

Everything that can be damaged is behind the steel, on the post.

Three ways to buy it

  • The standalone kit, for a range that already has steel and stands: element, box, battery, plug and play.

  • A single complete set: the kit plus the steel target, the stand, and a hard case to carry it in.

  • The six-set bundle: six complete sets, steel and stands included, for a course that opens the cases and starts training.

Who it is for

Ranges burning consumables every week on DIY heat, and courses where instructor time and student time are worth more than the hardware. The product came out of asking instructors who run our moving targets what the next problem was; this was the answer.

Kit contents and the packages are on the Thermal Optic Targets page. The install on your own steel is in Fitting the Thermal Heating Kit to Your Own Steel Target, and the comparison of every target type is in Best Thermal Targets in 2026.
