How much tension should be in the cable?”
It’s one of the most common questions people ask when setting up a moving target system. The honest answer? It depends.
Target weight, cable span, wind, and setup quality all affect how much tension you actually need. So instead of giving vague answers, we decided to test it properly.
The Fastest Way to Know if Your Cable Is Tight Enough
Before measuring anything, there’s one quick test that matters most.
Move the target carriage to one side of the cable and let go.
If it rolls back toward the center, the cable is too loose
If it stays in place, the tension is correct for that target weight
This simple check tells you more than any number on a scale.
It’s also the first thing to look at if the system feels underpowered or inconsistent.
Why Rear Guy Wire Placement Matters
Another key lesson from testing:
The rear guy wire should align as closely as possible with the height of the cable itself.
Why?
If the support angle is too low, you create a mechanical disadvantage that increases stress on the post.
The straighter the force path, the stronger the setup and the more stable the system becomes
Wind and Low Cable Systems
One thing visible during testing was target movement in strong wind.
For lightweight targets, high wind can cause:
Vertical bounce
Swinging
Instability
One solution is a low cable support system, which stabilizes the target from below.
Interestingly, once heavier steel targets were installed, wind became much less of an issue naturally.

This test proved something important:
Most moving target issues don’t come from the motor. They come from setup.
