Install a Permanent End Post for Your Moving Target

If your end posts aren’t solid, nothing else matters.
You can have the best moving target system on the market, but if your cable setup is weak, the whole system suffers. Movement becomes inconsistent, tension slips, and over time, small issues turn into bigger ones.
The good news is you don’t need a complicated build to get it right.
Here’s a simple, proven way to install a permanent 4x4 end post so your daily setup becomes as easy as raising and lowering a cable.
Start With the Right Post
The foundation of the setup is a standard 4x4 post.
Recommended specs:
12 feet total length
2 feet buried in the ground
This gives you enough height for proper cable positioning while keeping the structure stable.
You can add concrete for extra support and cross bracing if needed, but in most cases, that’s not the key factor.
The Real Secret: Guy Wire Alignment
If there’s one thing that determines whether your post holds up, it’s this:
Your guy wire must be perfectly in line with your cable.
Why it matters:
If the cable pulls in one direction and your support is angled differently, the post will start to lean or flex over time.
When everything is aligned:
The force travels straight through the post
The ratchet strap absorbs the load
The post stays upright and stable
This is where most setups go wrong—not the post itself, but how it’s supported.
Mount the Hand Winch at the Right Height
The hand winch is what makes your setup practical day-to-day.
Mount it:
4 to 5 feet off the ground
This gives you easy access to:
Raise the cable at the start of the day
Lower it at the end
Adjust mid-session if needed
It also means you don’t need a ladder, which keeps things safer and faster on the range.
Position the Pulley and Eyebolt
From the hand winch, the cable runs up to a pulley mounted near the top of the post.
Recommended placement:
10 to 12 feet off the ground
This height gives you enough clearance for target movement while managing cable sag.
Because no matter what you do:some sag is unavoidable.
Your goal isn’t to eliminate it completely—it’s to control it so the system runs smoothly.
Daily Use Becomes Simple
Once your permanent post is installed, your workflow changes completely.
Instead of rebuilding your setup every session, you can:
Lower the cable when you arrive
Raise and tension it in minutes
Start training almost immediately
That’s the real benefit—not just stability, but repeatability.
Other Attachment Options
A permanent 4x4 post is just one solution.
Depending on your range, you might also use:
Concrete walls
Berm anchors
Trees
Each option works as long as the attachment points are strong and properly aligned.
A solid end post doesn’t need to be complicated. Focus on proper post depth, straight-line force alignment, and correct hardware placement
Get those right, and your moving target system will run consistently every time you step onto the range.
