Hostage Target Add-Ons: Longer Arms, Wall Mount, Tripod Mount

Three add-ons turn the Hostage Rescue Target from a post-mounted head into a pop-out target for shoot houses and barriers. Longer linkage arms carry a silhouette just under a 66 percent IPSC, far enough out to show the whole thing and far enough down to hide it. A slip-on wall mount screws small plates to a wall, desk or barrier and the unit slides on and off them. A tripod thread in the bracket puts it on any camera tripod. The video sets all three up behind a plywood barrier and runs one-second exposures from the line.

Longer linkage arms

The standard arms move a head. The longer arms move a silhouette slightly smaller than a 66 percent IPSC, so the full shape rises above the steel or the wall and then drops all the way back behind it. Every direction of travel is the same as before; the arms only add reach. You can still run a head on them if the drill calls for a head.

The slip-on wall mount

Two small plates screw to the wall with ordinary wood screws. The unit slides onto them and lifts straight off at the end of the day for the drive home or a battery change. Where it goes is up to the drill: under a table, behind a desk, around a corner, or in the rat hole of a shoot house.

1. Hold the unit where you think it should go, with the power off so the arms can be moved by hand.

2. Push the links fully extended and look at what shows. Then push them fully down and check that the top of the head, or the silhouette, is hidden.

3. Move the unit until both positions look right, then screw the plates to the wall.

4. Slide the unit on, switch it on, and send it up and down once from the remote.

The stand-in wall for the test: a plywood panel with the DRX1 mark, the same as any wall or desk.

The tripod thread

The bracket has a threaded hole that takes a normal tripod mount screw. On a tripod the unit can be walked around a shoot house and set to pop out from a new place each run, with no screws in any wall.

The tripod thread on the bracket takes a standard tripod screw. Move it anywhere in a shoot house without drilling.

Behind a barrier on the range

Outdoors the same mount works behind a barrier panel. Stagger barriers down the range, mount a unit behind each, and run a walk-and-shoot lane where targets pop at different distances and positions. From anywhere on the firing line the remote sends the target up and back down; the video runs exposures of about one second to see whether a shot gets off in time.

The remote, in one paragraph

The joystick sends the target where you push it. Pressing the joystick button lights a blue light and lifts the safety limit, which lets the arms swing far enough to show the linkages, so leave the limit on for training. Top left records a pattern: hold to start, tap to finish, tap to play. Top right is random movement with random pauses. Bottom right is straight up and down. Bottom left is a pan.
