Flying With the Dynamic Range X1 Plus

A Guide to Packing and Flying with Your X1 Plus Target System and Portable End-Post Kit

When it comes to traveling with our X1 Plus target system, especially by plane, we rely on a practical setup that fits everything we need into a single Pelican case. This guide shows how we pack and transport the X1 Plus with our Portable End-Post Kit, which makes setting up in different locations efficient and easy.

The Setup: Pelican Case Specs and Packing Tips

For this, we use a 31 x 22 x 13-inch Pelican case with an empty weight of 25.2 pounds. While Pelican cases can be pricey, they’re durable enough to keep our equipment safe.

Important tip: we remove the wheels from the case, as they add extra weight that can push it over the 70-pound airline weight limit.

Inside the Case: Organizing the Portable End-Post Kit

Our Portable End-Post Kit includes collapsible fiberglass poles (these are an upgrade from the steel ones we previously used). Each pole collapses to under 31 inches, allowing it to fit snugly in the case. We also pack four guide wires with earth anchors to keep the setup stable during outdoor use.

  • Fiberglass poles are laid out at the bottom of the case.

  • The 800-pound hand winch comes pre-attached to the poles, with a custom cutout in the foam for secure storage.

  • Additional Items: Earth anchors, end post caps, and a remote are also packed in the case.

Customizing the Foam for a Secure Fit

The case originally came with pluck foam, which we wouldn’t recommend since it wears down quickly. Instead, we use solid foam, which we cut with a hot knife for a snug fit around the hand winch, poles, and other accessories. This approach keeps everything secure during transport.

Tips for Target Support

For target support, you could purchase 2x2 lumber to hang your target when you get to your destination to save on space. But for the purpose of this demo, we decided to take them for the ride anyway.

Final Touches: Ratchet Straps and Mounting Front

To save more space, we detached the target mount of the carriage and packed it flat on top of other components. We were also able to pack the ratchet straps and extra cord in the case. This setup not only keeps everything organized but also ensures that our equipment arrives ready to go for quick setup once we land.
