Moving Targets in IPSC and IDPA: Realistic Training for Competitive Shooters

If you shoot IPSC or IDPA, you already know how important timing, movement, and decision-making are to your score. Both sports are designed to test how well you can think and shoot under pressure. One way to make that challenge even more realistic is by adding moving targets into the mix.

We recently set up the Dynamic Range X1 Pro (AR500) at Target Sports Canada in Toronto to demonstrate its functionality in a real match environment.

Two Sports, One Shared Need

While IPSC and IDPA are different in how they score and structure each match, they share one key requirement when it comes to target movement: The shooter has to be the one to activate the target.

To make that happen, we used a shooter-activated button. Step on it or tap it, and the target starts moving. It’s quick to set up and easy to use, which makes it a great option for clubs or match directors looking to add motion without adding complexity.

Why Use Moving Targets in Competitive Training?

Movement helps you build better habits and sharper reflexes. Here’s what it improves:

  • Target tracking while moving or shooting from cover

  • Stage creativity without needing permanent hardware

  • Reaction timing and split-second decision making

  • Shooter engagement by keeping things fresh and challenging

Thinking About Adding Motion to Your Match?

If you run a club or host matches and want to try something different, we can help. The X1 system works indoors and outdoors and doesn’t need complicated gear to get going. It’s a great way to introduce movement to your stages without turning your setup upside down.
